Montreal’s Bouge de là dance company brings the brilliant, creative and engaging “The 26 Letter Dance” to The Bailey Theatre this Sunday, April 14 at 2 pm as part of the TECK Family Series.
The show, aimed at children aged 4 to 10, is a colourful, fun, educational and interactive multidisciplinary alphabet primer. In this bold and playful work, Bouge de là invite children to take part in a unique experience in which they both see a dance performance and actively participate.
The performance starts with the four dancers going into the audience to search for letters supplied by young audience members. When a child provides a letter, the dancer goes back onto the stage to announce that they have “found” the letter, which is then drawn onto a large blackboard at the back of the stage.
Once all the letters have been found, the dancers perform the letters with a different emphasis on each, some explored in detail with their stories attached, while other letters are only shown. The dance numbers are athletic and engaging ranging from high-energy hip-hop to quieter moments where the dancer explores emotions, from joy to sadness, associated with letters, all enhanced by arresting visual effects and electronic soundscapes.
Bouge de là is a professional dance company, run by artistic director and choreographer, Hélène Langevin, who has been imparting the pleasure of dance to youngsters for almost 30 years. As a result, the company focuses exclusively on performances for children aged 4 to 10.
The show will be performed in English on Sunday with a special French school show on Monday.
